Come with us to the year 3,000,458,000 B.C. and experience the world’s first salt-eating yeasts as they float through creation in the brine of the primordial sea. This dangerous and newly formed world is inhabited by the brave and tragic yeasts, all named Jan. More concerned with survival than a complex naming system – the Jans must find a way to survive and build the foundation for the world we live in today. The cast, led by Tony Award winning actress Harriet Harris (Thoroughly Modern Millie, “Desperate Housewives,” “Frasier”), and director, Tony Award winning co-creator Greg Kotis (Urinetown: the Musical), fearlessly answer the questions of creation, evolution, and our responsibility to our ancestors.

it certainly isn’t a surprise that Yeast Nation is sold out for the rest of the FringeNYC run, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it is granted an extension and the time before it makes it to Broadway is likely short. If you have a chance to get a ticket, take it. You won’t be sorry.
The music of Yeast Nation is exciting and energetic, with the catchy tunes, inspiring ballads, and powerful choral numbers we expect (hope for) from Kotis and Hollmann. The cast’s voices soar and the so do the hearts of the audience. That’s right, I saw some people wiping tears in that dark theatre.
The whole show is hilarious. Youʼll split your sides laughing
- Chicago Tribune
Hollmann’s accomplished rock score and Kotis’s book, which deals in twisted Shakespearean themes between the metatheatrical jokes, are thoroughly enjoyable
- Time Out Chicago
It might be considered the bastard child of Euripides and Casey Kasem.
